Toxic Train Derailment Forces Clara City, Minnesota Town to Evacuate

Clara City, Minn. - A train derailment in the Minnesota town of Clara City, boasting a general population count of around 1,000 residents, forced almost one-third of the town’s residents to be evacuated.  The train derailment was the result of a two train incident in which more than 80 cars from the two trains were derailed.  The cause of the harrowing evacuation, however, was not from the derailment itself, but the contents of the cars which were derailed.

Mayor Curt Koenen says the derailment caused a large hydrochloric acid spill on Monday.  The mayor went on to say the leaking tanker holding the hydrochloric acid has ceased leaking; however, hazardous vapors are still rising from the acid spill.  Hazard crews will soon be sent to the site to plant soda ash and lime to sop up the remaining hydrochloric acid spill.

The derailment and spill forces evacuations on the west and north sides of Clara City, which is located about 95 miles west of Minneapolis, as well as few local area farms.  Thus far, no injuries have been reported, but the mayor stated it could be up to six hours before residents are allowed to return safely to their homes.

The causes of train accidents can be grouped into five categories.

A train accident will occur in one of five different ways.  The five main reasons for train accidents are: (1) human factors, (2) track and structures, (3) equipment, (4) signal and train control, and (5) miscellaneous.

The majority of train accidents are caused by human factors or track factors.

During a recent five year study, it has been determined that the great majority of train accidents resulted from human factor causes or track causes.  In addition, in recent years, most of the serious events involving train collisions or derailments resulting in release of hazardous material, or harm to rail passengers, have resulted from human factor or track causes.

The United States Government enacted the Federal Employers’ Liability Act (FELA), in 1908.

Congress passed FELA with the intent to decrease tragic railroad accidents.  In addition, FELA encourages standardization in railroad practices and railroad equipment.
