Railroad Accident Report - Collision and Derailment of Norfolk Southern Freight Train in Graniteville, South Carolina
On January 6, 2005, northbound Norfolk Southern freight train 192 encountered an improperly lined switch that diverted the train from the main line onto an industry track where it struck an unoccupied, parked train P22. The collision derailed both locomotives and 16 of the 42 freight cars if train 192 as well as the locomotive and 1 of 2 cars of train P22. Among the derailed cars from train 192 were three tank cars containing chlorine, one of which was breached, releasing chlorine gas. The train engineer and eight other people died as a result of chlorine gas inhalation. About 5,400 people within a 1-mile radius of the derailment site were evacuated for several days many of them complaining of respiratory difficulties. Press Contact: Keith Holloway

The causes of train accidents can be grouped into five categories.

A train accident will occur in one of five different ways. The five main reasons for train accidents are: (1) human factors, (2) track and structures, (3) equipment, (4) signal and train control, and (5) miscellaneous.

The majority of train accidents are caused by human factors or track factors.

During a recent five year study, it has been determined that the great majority of train accidents resulted from human factor causes or track causes. In addition, in recent years, most of the serious events involving train collisions or derailments resulting in release of hazardous material, or harm to rail passengers, have resulted from human factor or track causes.
